Netball
Netball is played by more than 20 million people in 80 countries and is extremely popular in the UK with a projected 1 million participants per year. By far the most common injury sustained is ankle injuries which may make up as many as 40% of all injuries.
Common ankle injuries include:
- Ligament Injuries include: Anterior Talo-Fibular Ligament Injury, Calcaneal- Fibular Ligament Injury, Deltoid Ligament Injury, Lis-Franc Injuries, Syndesmosis Ligament Injury.
- Joint/Bone Problems can be located at: Subtalor Joint, Talo-Crural Joint, Talo-Navicular Joint, Cuboid Pain, Stress Fractures
- Tendon and Muscle Injuries: Tibialis Posterior Dysfunction, Toe Flexor Injuries, Calf muscle Injuries, Achilles Tendinopathy, Achilles Tenosynovitis.
The problem is that without good rehabilitation increased injury risk remains for up to two years after an injury has occurred. This is why you often hear players saying things like “I have rolled my ankle again, I can’t play this weekend”. Physiotherapists would call this a recurrent injury or re-injury. Research shows us that good rehabilitation can significantly reduce the risk of injury, so it is a good idea to seek good physiotherapy treatment if you have injured your ankle playing your favourite sport.
Other common injuries in netball include knee injuries such as anterior cruciate ligament injuries, patella tendon injuries and patella femoral joint pain (links). As well as low back issues such as disc injuries, joint pain and muscle spasm. Many of these can be helped with good physiotherapy so give us a call to discuss your treatment options.
