Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE)
SCFE is a condition that is found in the hips of children. The slip of the topside of the head of the femur occurs at the growth plate and can occur for a number of reasons such as mechanical trauma, inflammatory conditions and infection to name a few. It is more likely to be seen in boys between the age of 10 and 17 years. Most report groin pain or outside thigh pain as the main symptom, which is aggravated by jogging, jumping or twisting movements.
Surgery is normally advised, with good to excellent outcomes expected. Following surgery physiotherapy can assist with the restoration of movement and functional strength.
For those with the onset of hip pain, a physiotherapy assessment could assist in the recognition of the problem, with prompt assessment improving management and outcome. If your child has hip pain, call the physiotherapy clinic today for an in-depth and professional assessment.
