Basketball
Basketball is a high speed, high skill sport played by over 200 million people worldwide and by over 250,000 people in the UK. It is not surprising therefore that basketball players’ are frequently injured and that we commonly see injuries from this sport in physiotherapy. The most common injury seen in basketball players is ankle injuries. On average if your injured playing basketball there is a 1 in 3 chance that it will be an ankle injury. There are many different ankle injuries that can occur many of which are listed below.
Common Ankle Injuries

The problem is that many people return to the court without fully rehabilitating. This then leaves them susceptible to injury. Good rehabilitation can significantly reduce the risk involved, so it is really important that you seek out the right people.
One of the most common and serious injuries particularly in women is an anterior cruciate ligament rupture (link). This ligament provides stability for the knee joint. In the vast majority of cases surgery is needed known as an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. This is a serious injury, which can take up to one year to recover from. Interestingly research studies show injury prevention exercisescan have a significant chance of reducing this injury. So even if you haven’t suffered from this injury it is worth seeking an assessment with one of our physiotherapists to find out how you can reduce the chances of the injury occurring.
Other common knee injuries sustained in Basketball include: Patella Femoral Pain,Posterior Cruciate Ligament Injury, Cartilage Injury, Patella Tendonitis, Medial Collateral Ligament Injuries and Postero-Lateral Corner Injuries (links for all).
