Juvenile Arthritis

Juvenile Arthritis (JA) is a broad term used to describe joint inflammation and pain in children aged 16 years and under. As well as joint pain JA can also cause problems with the eyes, skin and gastrointestinal tract. The cause is not always clear but it is believed to be in part associated with the auto-immune system. A diagnosis is made by a Paediatrician who will look for certain signs and symptoms as well as carry out a physical assessment. A number of investigations such as blood tests and X-rays may also be undertaken.

The treatment for JA will depend on your child’s presentation, as JA can present in many different ways. Often appropriate physical activity and exercises will be one area that a physiotherapist can help with. Please call to discuss treatment options.
