Flat feet

Flat feet describes a child who has low or no foot arches at all.  This is not usually a problem and intervention is not often needed.  Arch height varies from person to person but most people have a noticeable space on the inner part of their foot when their foot is in contact with the ground.  Children’s foot arches may not fully develop until the age of 10, so intervention before this age is usually unnecessary.

Flat feet are easiest to spot when someone is walking or standing. Trained Physiotherapists can carryout a full biomechanical assessment to assess for the presence of flat feet.

Flat feet can have many causative factors.  You are advised to seek help if your child has flat feet and their feet are painful despite supportive footwear, their shoes wear out quickly and unevenly, the feet appear to be getting flatter or they experience foot weakness, stiffness or numbness.  If you are concerned it is best to seek a medical opinion from your GP or a physical assessment from a trained Physiotherapist. This is where we at The Physiotherapy Academy can help.  Call or email today to book an appointment.
