Meniscus tear

A tear in the knee cartilage (meniscus) is an injury which can occur from a one off sporting activity, continued loading of the knee or even from everyday activities that involve a sudden twist of the knee.  There are two different parts of the meniscus that sits in the knee joint between the tibia (shin bone) and femur (thigh bone); the lateral meniscus which is located on the outer side of the knee and the medial meniscus which is located on the inside of the knee. The role of the meniscus is to act as a shock absorber for forces produced at the knee. With injury, pain is normally located on the inside or the outside of the knee joint line. Swelling of the knee joint normally accompanies the pain felt, and may take up to 3 months to fully settle.

Healing of the meniscus can occur if the tear is located on the outer edges of the meniscus as the peripheral blood supply from surrounding tissues can assist with healing. In some instances surgery is performed for ongoing symptoms after failed rehabilitation, this may consist of trimming the damaged meniscus or suturing the meniscus back down. Stem cell research has also been used for the repair of meniscal injury.

What you can do:

The use of ice, compression and analgesics is recommended with sudden injury. Once the acute pain has settled, active rehabilitation is required to assist with recovery.
